Tech giant IBM is making a big splash in the world of artificial intelligence (AI) with a two-pronged approach. First, they’re releasing a new family of AI models called “Granite” as open-source software. This means anyone can access and modify these models for free, fostering collaboration and innovation in the AI community.

Secondly, IBM is partnering with Saudi Arabia’s data and AI authority to train a new Arabic language model called “ALLaM.” This collaboration will leverage IBM’s Watsonx platform to enhance ALLaM’s capabilities, including the ability to understand various Arabic dialects.

This strategy is a clear departure from some competitors who keep their AI models under tight wraps and charge for access. IBM believes open-source models will benefit everyone in the long run, while still generating revenue through their Watsonx platform which helps companies run and customize these models effectively.

“We’re at the beginning of a new era for generative AI models,” said Arvind Krishna, IBM’s CEO. “Open competition ultimately benefits the consumers, and we’re committed to responsible development in this field.”
