Apple has temporarily stopped rolling out its new iPadOS 18 update for iPad Pro models with the M4 chip. This comes after several users reported their devices were “bricked,” meaning they couldn’t turn them on after the update.
Many users tried the usual methods to fix the issue, like forcing a restart or entering recovery mode, but nothing worked. Unfortunately, the only solution has been for affected customers to take their devices to an Apple Store for further inspection.
Both Apple’s support forums and Reddit have been buzzing with user complaints. Some shared their experiences in detail, hoping to figure out what went wrong.
Some believe the issue happens when users jump directly from iPadOS 17.6.1 to iPadOS 18 without installing version 17.7 first. However, others dismissed this theory, saying they updated the same way without any problems.
There’s also speculation that a failure during the final phase of the update process, called iBoot, may have caused the devices to stop working by corrupting key files needed to start the iPad.
Apple Responds
In a statement to MacRumors, Apple acknowledged the problem and paused the iPadOS 18 update to prevent further issues. The company said the problem affects only a small number of devices but didn’t provide specific details about what went wrong or how many users were impacted.
“We have temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue that is affecting a small number of devices,” Apple told MacRumors.
