Tor Project has officially launched WebTunnel, a new type of bridges specifically designed to help circumvent censorship that targets the Tor network by obscuring connections to it. Tor bridges keep users’ connections to the network private. However, countries like China and Iran have found ways to detect and block these connections.
WebTunnel takes a different approach. It makes it more difficult to block Tor connections by ensuring that its traffic is mixed in with regular HTTPS-encrypted web traffic. Since blocking HTTPS would also block the vast majority of internet communications, WebTunnel connections are effectively allowed through, enabling censorship circumvention.
WebTunnel can be used with the Tor Browser on Android and on desktops.
WebTunnel bridges are not the only ones available from the Tor Project to bypass blocking. There are other bridges like obfsproxy, which add an extra layer to combat censorship efforts. You can find the available bridges in the browser’s connection settings.
