On Monday, May 13, 2024, Google released security updates for the Chrome browser to address a high-severity zero-day vulnerability. Zero-day vulnerabilities are software security flaws that are known to attackers and exploited before the software vendor has a chance to fix them.
The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2024-4761, is related to Chrome’s JavaScript engine and could allow attackers to gain unauthorized access to your data or even take control of your device.
Users are urged to update to Chrome version 124.0.6367.207/208 for Mac and Windows and 124.0.6367.207 for Linux as soon as possible. If you are using another Chromium-based browser such as Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, or Vivaldi, it is also important to update it as soon as possible to get the latest security patches.
How to update Chrome:
- Open Chrome
- Click on the three dots in the top right corner of the browser window
- Select “Help”
- Select “About Google Chrome”
- Chrome will check for updates and download and install them if available
- Restart Chrome for the updates to take effect
