Our Story: How Individual Solidarity Evolved into a Civic Tech Lab?
Tech Mentor did not begin as a commercial enterprise nor as an insular cybersecurity firm. It emerged as a human and ethical response by Egyptian engineers and researchers to a digital reality threatening the safety and liberty of everyone holding a device.
"Digital safety is neither a luxury for corporate boardrooms nor a privilege for those who can afford exorbitant consulting. It is a fundamental human right, and defensive technology must reach those most vulnerable first."
The Spark: Post-COVID Reality & The Silent Threat
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Egyptian society witnessed an abrupt and massive digital migration. Human rights advocacy, investigative journalism, and everyday grassroots work shifted online overnight. Yet, as people embraced cloud meetings and platforms, the threat landscape evolved with alarming velocity.
Distress calls poured into independent tech volunteers: a reporter noticing suspicious battery drain and phantom activity, a human rights advocate locked out of their accounts, a woman activist targeted by coordinated extortion after device compromise. Existing options were either prohibitively expensive, overly academic, or untrusted channels that compounded the victim's risk.
Out of this crisis, Tech Mentor was born: Why not build an independent, open civic tech lab in Egypt? A safe sanctuary uniting skilled volunteers to demystify security, translate complex exploits into accessible Arabic, and extend an unyielding hand to those without an institutional shield.
Milestones in Building the Civic Shield
We did not appear overnight. The initiative grew step-by-step through frontline response and daily engagement with real-world threats.
Frontline Inception: Covert Support & Rapid Triage
The initiative launched as an unpublicized volunteer emergency collective: recovering breached accounts, analyzing spyware payloads on journalists' phones, and auditing field communications during sensitive investigations.
Open Knowledge: Hands-On Guides in Plain Arabic
Recognizing that security cannot merely be reactive, we prioritized proactive defense. We published our first visual Arabic field guides covering Signal hardening, full-disk encryption, and mobile checkpoint protocols, training over 50 grassroots teams.
The Integrated Civic Lab: Live CVE Radar & Zero-Persistence
Launching the current platform featuring the live Threat Radar tracking targeted regional vulnerabilities (CVEs), alongside a zero-persistence helpline utilizing client-side PGP encryption to ensure zero forensic data is ever retained on servers.
Who Stands Behind Tech Mentor?
Security & Network Engineers
Specialists in malware reverse engineering, infrastructure penetration testing, anti-censorship protocols, and hardened open-source systems.
Digital Rights & Feminist Researchers
Advocates tracking surveillance abuses, mitigating tech-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV), and providing trauma-informed holistic accompaniment.
Field Trainers & Tech Documenters
Educators demystifying cybersecurity from abstract theory into daily muscle memory through interactive simulations and operational hygiene protocols.
The sensitivity of field work and the nature of cyber threats in Egypt mandate strict operational security for both our team and beneficiaries. We deliver our work in unconditional peer solidarity, free from personal vanity or corporate posturing.
How We Practice Digital Security Differently?
To us, digital security is not a proprietary commodity to be sold; it is a solidarity practice anchored in four cardinal tenets:
Radical Independence & Non-Profit Mission
We sell no commercial products, accept no vendor kickbacks, and run zero ads or tracking pixels. Our uncompromised independence is the sole guarantee of our defensive recommendations.
Client-Side Encryption & Zero-Persistence
We never maintain databases cataloging those who reach out. Intakes are encrypted locally in the user's browser via PGP before transmission, and purged immediately upon triage.
Free & Open Source Software (FOSS)
Digital sovereignty cannot be attained through proprietary black-box software. Everything we recommend and engineer relies on open-source code audited by the global community.
Trauma-Informed & Non-Judgmental Support
Victims of breaches and extortion face acute psychological terror. We never blame the victim, nor do we offer clinical lectures; we provide a compassionate, safe space.
Core Questions About Tech Mentor
Q1: Is Tech Mentor a commercial cybersecurity company?
Never. Tech Mentor is a 100% volunteer, non-profit civic tech initiative. All our manuals, security audits, and emergency incident responses are provided entirely free of charge.
Q2: How do you guarantee the confidentiality of those who reach out?
We live by the principle: "What we do not hold cannot be breached." We never demand real names (pseudonyms are welcomed), messages are client-side encrypted, communications take place via PGP and Signal, and zero logs are stored on our servers.
Q3: Do you only support established NGOs, or individuals as well?
We support anyone facing a digital threat in Egypt, prioritizing those most targeted and vulnerable: independent journalists, human rights defenders, and women facing online gender-based extortion.
Q4: How can I contribute or volunteer with Tech Mentor?
We warmly welcome peer contributions: technical translation, auditing open-source guides, reviewing code, or submitting threat telemetry from the field. Reach out to us via our official email.
Technology belongs to all of us; defending it is our collective duty.
Whether you need urgent emergency accompaniment, wish to organize a field security training for your team, or want to contribute to our open-source documentation, our encrypted channels are always open.
